Alphabets Heaven

Laser guided beatwork comes as standard from Jonny Wildey aka Alphabets Heaven, a master of his hyper-sculpted, searing poly-rhythmic electronic sound, impressing hip-hop, RnB, jazz, n' garage traces onto fluid extra-national grooves. We ask him a few questions...

What or who inspired you to start making music?

I got really obsessed with Jimi Hendrix when I was about 12. I think it all came from there.

Can you say a little about an artist or two that have influenced your music, but in an implicit random or surprising way, that might not be immediately obvious through listening to your music?

I don't know if it's obvious or not but Fania records - Joe Bataan, Larry Harlow and that Salsa stuff, has had a huge influence on my music. I wish it was easier to get hold of in the UK.

Can you name a couple of albums that you’ve particularly enjoyed recently?

  • Ex-Easter Island Head - Mallet Guitars 3
  • Laura Groves - Committed Language
  • Mick Jenkins - The Water[s]

Can you give us a clue as to what else you’re working on at the moment?

New EP should be out sometime this year. Midnight swimming music.

Can you name a record label that's been catching your attention?

Looking forward to Widad Records' new releases, think it's representing something the world should see more of.
Local Action Records - So much of what I love of the East London sound.
